For 2013, the Land Rover LR2 dropped the 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine from its lineup in favor of a turbocharged four banger, which has now been EPA rated at 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway for a combined 20 mpg.
These fuel numbers best the previous engine by 2 mpg on the highway and in the city, and 3 mpg combined, all while making 10 more hp and more torque. Poor fuel economy was cited as one of the major issues with the outgoing model, though despite the improvement, the LR2 still falls short of some of its competitors.
The 2013 Audi Q5 with a four-cylinder gets 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway according to the EPA, though it falls 30 hp short of the LR2. The 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine gets 21 mpg city and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA, also beating out the LR2 in fuel efficiency.
