Jaguar Land Rover‘s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division is preparing a hardcore, off-roading Discovery model.

According to a report from Autocar, SVO is preparing a Land Rover Discovery SVX model that will be available 12-18 months after the next-generation Discovery debuts next year. The more extreme, off-road variant will showcase the potential of the new Discovery, although details are light on what SVO will do to the SUV. Sources say that the British automaker is eager to show off the company’s technical and mechanical ability with modifications focusing on technological solutions to dealing with extreme off-road conditions.

SVO boss John Edwards declined to comment on specific models that are in development, but did admit that there is a market for hardcore 4×4 SUVs. “There is a market for more off-road capability, so of course we’re looking at it,” said Edwards in an interview with Autocar. “In the U.S. there’s a wide snowbelt, in the Middle East there’s extreme sand and in regions such as Australia and South Africa there is a need to cover very rugged terrain.”

Last year, Land Rover showcased the Discovery Vision concept that included a virtual windscreen and hood that took advantage of cameras to give an unimpeded view of the road ahead and underneath the car.
