In the future, your cars might be better at predicting the weather than that guy on the news.
According to Autocar, Jaguar Land Rover has filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization for a system that will prepare a vehicle for certain weather conditions. By checking air temperature, pressure, humidity, and light, as well as using local weather information from a GPS connection, the system can adjust a vehicle’s interior temperature, drivetrain settings, and traction control accordingly.
In addition, the patent application notes “the forecast may be distributed to one or more vehicles,” meaning the information could be shared across vehicles that are communicating with one another.

Although it’s unclear whether this technology will make its way to a production vehicle anytime soon, such a system would be advantageous on autonomous vehicles. Since there’s no human driver present, the system would allow the vehicle to make it comfortable for its passengers, based on current weather conditions. It could also make the vehicle safer if it knows rain or snow is coming.
