Move over heads-up displays, augmented reality is making its way to vehicles.
Land Rover will debut its Discovery Vision concept at this year’s New York Auto Show, and will showcase a new “see-through” hood, which takes advantage of augmented reality technology to give the driver a view of what’s underneath and in front of the vehicle. Aimed to make off-road driving easier, the tech will not only allow the driver to see the terrain ahead, but keep track of the position of the front wheels.

It uses a “smart” windscreen that can display a full-width computer-generated image thanks to cameras mounted on the vehicle’s front grille. According to Wolfgang Epple, director of R&D at Jaguar Land Rover, the technology will also be useful in urban city driving situations.
