When the next-generation Freelander is unveiled, Land Rover could be rebadging it as a Discovery model.
The successor to the Freelander is expected to be larger than the current iteration and will be offered with a seven-seater variant. Those major changes make it likely that the British automaker will brand it as a Discovery model, creating a sub-brand for Land Rover.

The new two-model Discovery sub-brand would have a similar naming convention as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models, if the automaker chooses to go down that path. Currently in America, the Freelander is better known as the LR2, while the Discovery is badged as the LR4.
The Freelander successor will be built on a version of the current model’s steel platform and will continue to be produced in England.
